2020 Del Hughes Award Winners

The Del Hughes Award is awarded each year by the Stage Managers’ Association (SMA) in honor of lifetime achievement in the field of Stage Management.

PATRESHETTARLINI ADAMS (Pat)

is the Resident Stage Manager at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia. She has been with the organization since the theater opened in its new home on the Avenue of the Arts in 1996. She is a 30 year, card-carrying member of Actors’ Equity! Pat’s career encompasses work on over 100 productions. She has also traveled internationally with acclaimed dance company, Noche Flamenca! Pat is proud to serve as Secretary for the Philadelphia Area Liaison Committee; a Board Member for Theatre Philadelphia; a Christ-Servant Minister and Chairperson of the Trustee Board for Emmanuel UMC; a member of the Stage Manager’s Association; and forever a member of the backstage crew at Philly’s Barrymore Awards.

ALDEN VASQUEZ

has stage managed approximately 30 seasons at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Alden’s many resident theater credits include 14 productions with The Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, including the Broadway productions of The Song of Jacob Zulu (also in Perth, Australia) and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. Alden has taught stage management at DePaul University in Chicago for 22 years, and is a 36 year member of Actor’s Equity Association. He is a United States Air Force Veteran. Alden is married to actor, director and author Jerry Miller.

Cheryl has been the Resident PSM at McCarter Theatre for 29 years and during the pandemic has founded a digital event company, princetonVIRTUAL, with partners and stage managers Alison Cote and Seth Mellman!

YUE SHI

石玥 Yue Shi is a bilingual Stage Manager for American and Chinese theater productions and special events. She is proudly from Shanghai, China.

2020 SMA Founders Award | ROBERT I. SUTHERLAND-COHEN

has been a production stage manager and/or production coordinator for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theatre productions, New York City Opera, and Lincoln Center Festivals. Additionally, he was Entertainment Operations Manager for the Tropicana for 10 years, and Associate Producer/Writer for Westinghouse TV. Robert has served on the Executive Board of the SMA, for which he was a founding member and a multiple-term chairperson. Retired as Associate Professor (emeritus) in Stage Management and Production Management: Brooklyn College, Department of Theater, Robert has also taught at Emerson College, Stockton State College, and guest lectured at Yale University, SUNY Purchase, and West Chester University. Instrumental in the formation of the USITT Stage Management Mentoring Project, he has mentored since its inception. Robert’s books include: Introduction to Theatre Production: Creating Theatre Onstage, Backstage & Offstage (Focal Press), and the graphic illustrated non-fiction biography Tesla for Beginners (For Beginners Press). He has been a proud member Actors’ Equity Association for 50 years, and the American Guild of Musical Artists. Throughout this journey he has had the support, patient understanding, and love of his wife Patricia, who was a founding member of the SMA.
